Kinky Boots: An Official A&M Review

Kinky Boots opened for the first time in Minneapolis last night to a sold-out audience at the Orpheum Theatre. The energy was buzzing, and it was clear that anticipation for the show was high and the audience was ready for a good time. Kinky Boots did not disappoint, from the Tony-winning original score by Cyndi Lauper to the fabulous costume designs.
The show follows the story of Charlie Price who suddenly finds himself running the sinking family shoe business. Inspired by a chance meeting with Lola, a drag queen with a larger-than-life personality (and voice), Charlie changes the direction of Price and Son and with it, his entire life. It is a story of friendship and acceptance wrapped in colorful corsets and dazzling thigh-high stiletto boots.
The music is fun and upbeat, with a closing number that practically had people dancing in the aisles (the men in front of my literally jumped out of their seats the second it ended to give a standing ovation). Kyle Taylor Parker steals the show as Lola, perfectly playing both sizzling diva and down-to-earth guy who just wants to be accepted for who he is. His ability to strut and dance in 6-inch heels put me (and likely all of the other women in the audience) to shame.
