Priscilla Queen of the Desert: An Official A&M Review

Last night I had the pleasure of attending opening night of Priscilla Queen of the Desert at the Orpheum Theatre. I didn’t know much about the show – 3 drag queens travel through the Australian outback to the soundtrack of pop hits from the 70s and 80s – but then again, that was really all I needed to know. From the first line of the first song “It’s Raining Men” I knew I was in for a fun night.

What instantly struck me upon entering the theatre was the crowd, consisting mainly of middle-aged and older women who seemed ready to party – and that’s exactly what they did. The crowd was rowdy, hooting and hollering as hard-bodied males began dancing in glittery gold g-strings to “Material Girl.”

The show was filled with unapologetically raunchy humor that was sometimes enough to make me blush. Be warned that the content is PG-13 at best, so choose your show companion wisely. This isn’t one I’d recommend taking mom to unless you’d also feel comfortable watching Magic Mike with her.

In a word, Priscilla Queen of the Desert is Faaaabulous. The songs will have you dancing in your seat, but the costumes are what really steal the show. I’m fairly certain there are more feathers, glitter, and fringe in this 2.5 hour show than an entire season of Dancing with the Stars.

So if you’re looking for a fun night out, Priscilla is a perfect choice – just round up your closest pals, pile on a few feather boas, and get ready to laugh. The show runs through Sunday, January 13th in Minneapolis before moving on to its next tour location. For more information and tickets, visit
